We demand that the Belgian government immediately intervenes with the Iraqi authorities to save the life of Oussama Atar, a young Belgian, aged 26, who has been detained in Iraq for six years.

In the messages that he has sent us during the last years, via the Red Cross, my brother Oussama has never complained about his diabolical conditions of detention. But, in the last few weeks, he started to send SOS messages that his health is rapidly deteriorating: he loses blood and weight visibly. Me and my family are extremely worried about the situation. My brother is Belgian, he was born in Belgium, an honest citizen of good behaviour. He is today in a grave and critical state. He needs the urgent medical treatment that is being refused by the prison authorities. We ask that the Belgian authorities intervene as quickly as possible to ensure that Oussama receives immediate hospital treatment. We demand that the Belgium government goes through the diplomatic channels so that Oussama can receive medical treatment in Belgium and complete his sentence in Belgium.

Oussama was arrested in the village of Ramadi in Iraq for having illegally crossed over the frontier from Syria into Iraq. This is the single act for which he has been reproached. Unjustly condemned for this by a tribunal to 25 years in prison, a sentence reduced on appeal to 10 years, he has been sent to several prisons, such as the horrible Abu Ghraib, where many scandals have been exposed, as well as Camp Bucca situated in the desert, then to the camp Cropper, and finally to the prison of Rusufa in Bagdad. The Belgian government can no longer close their eyes to this case.

In his report of 11 March 2010, even the US Department of State, recognised that in 2009 at least “505 cases of torture have taken place in Iraqi prisons”. The Belgian government can no longer hide behind the fact that they have no extradition treaty with Iraq. If there is the political will to resolve the problem, a solution can be found : within the European Union (Belgium takes over the presidency on 1 July 2010), or through another country that could obtain his extradition.

The life of a young Belgian man is in grave danger, it is necessary to take action before it is too late.

I appeal to all persons, to each elected parliamentary representative, to all associations and organisations working who work for human rights in Belgium and in Europe, to support us in our attempts to use all channels available to us in order to save the life of my brother.

APPEL SOS URGENT ! Sauvons la vie d'Oussama Atar, détenu belge en Irak.

Nous demandons que la Belgique intervienne immédiatement auprès des autorités irakiennes pour sauver la vie d'Oussama Atar, un jeune belge de 26 ans, qui est détenu en Irak depuis 6 ans.

Dans les messages qu'il nous a envoyé pendant toutes ces années par l'intermédiaire de la Croix Rouge, mon frère Oussama ne s'est jamais plaint de ses conditions de détention infernales.
Mais, il y a quelques semaines, il a commencé à envoyer des SOS disant que sa santé est en train de se détériorer rapidement : il perd du sang et du poids à vue d'œil.
Ma famille et moi même sommes extrêmement inquiets quant à sa situation.
Mon frère est belge né en Belgique, un citoyen honnête au comportement irréprochable.

Il est aujaurd hui dans un état grave et critique.Il a besoin urgemment de soins et d'examens médicaux qui lui sont refusés par les autorités pénitentières.Nous demandons que la belgique intervienne pour qu Oussama puisse être hospitalisé au plus vite.

Nous demandons que la Belgique entreprenne les démarches diplomatiques nécessaires pour que mon frère Oussama Atar puisse venir se faire soigner en Belgique et qu'il y finisse sa peine.

La Belgique ne peut pas fermer les yeux face à ce cas.

Dans son rapport du 11 mars 2010, même le ministère américain des affaires étrangères (the Us Department of State) reconnait qu'en 2009 "au moins 505 cas de torture ont été enregistrés dans les prisons irakiennes".
La Belgique ne peut plus se cacher derrière le fait qu'elle n'a pas de traité d'extradition avec l'Irak. S'il y a une volonté politique pour résoudre ce problème, une solution peut être trouvéeau sein de l'Union européenne, dont la Belgique assurera la présidence à partir du 1er juillet 2010, ou à
travers un autre pays qui peut obtenir son extradition.

La vie de ce jeune Belge est en grand danger, il faut agir avant qu'il ne soit trop tard.

Je fais appel à toute personne, à chaque parlementaire ou élu(e), à toute association,organisation travaillant pour le respect des droits de l'homme en Belgique et en Europe, à nous soutenir et à tenter des démarches qui pourraient sauver la vie de mon frère.

SOS ! Red het leven van Oussama Atar, een Belgische gevangene in Irak.

Wij vragen een onmiddellijke Belgische tussenkomst bij de Irakese autoriteiten om het leven te redden van Oussama Atar (26 jaar oud, van Belgische nationaliteit), die sinds 6 jaar in een Irakese gevangenis zit.

In de boodschappen die Oussama de afgelopen jaren via het Rode Kruis aan de familie toestuurde, heeft mijn broer nooit geklaagd over de helse omstandigheden in de gevangenissen waar hij verbleef.
Maar sinds enkele weken stuurt hij ons alarmerende berichten. Hij vertelt ons dat zijn gezondheidstoestand dramatisch achteruitgaat : hij verliest bloed en vermagert zienderogen.
Mijn familie en ikzelf zijn uitermate ongerust over zijn gezondheidstoestand.
Mijn broer is geboren in België. Hij is altijd een eerlijk burger geweest met een onberispelijk gedrag. Vandaag is zijn toestand uitermate ernstig en kritiek.
Hij heeft dringend een aangepaste medische verzorging nodig, iets wat hem door de gevangenisautoriteiten wordt geweigerd.
Wij vragen dat België zou tussenkomen om Oussama zo snel als mogelijk te doen opnemen in een hospitaal.

Wij vragen dat België diplomatieke stappen zou ondernemen om ervoor te zorgen dat mijn broer Oussama voor medische verzorging naar België zou worden overgebracht en hier ook zijn verdere straf zou kunnen uitdoen.

Oussama is gearresteerd in de stad Ramidi omdat hij illegaal de Syrisch-Irakese grens is overgestoken. Het is de enige beschuldiging die er tegen hem is ingebracht.
Hij heeft hiervoor 25 jaar gevangenisstraf gekregen, een straf die in beroep is verminderd tot 10 jaar opsluiting.
Sinds zijn veroordeling is Oussama overgebracht van de ene gevangenis naar de andere : van de gruwelijke Abu Ghraib gevangenis, bekend omwille van de folteringen door Amerikaanse militairen, naar Kamp Bucca in de woestijn, naar Kamp Cropper, en tenslotte naar de Rusufa gevangenis in Bagdad (zie : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7748016.stm).

België kan hiervoor niet langer de ogen sluiten.

In zijn rapport van 11 maart 2010 erkent zelfs het Amerikaanse ministerie van buitenlandse zaken (het US State Department) dat er in 2009 alleen al "minstens 505 gevallen van foltering in de Irakese gevangenissen zijn vastgesteld".
België kan zich niet langer blijven verstoppen achter de bewering dat het machteloos is omdat het "geen uitleveringsverdrag met Irak heeft". Indien er een politieke wil is om deze zaak op te lossen dan kan er een oplossing gevonden worden : op het niveau van de Europese Unie, waarvan België het voorzitterschap waarneemt vanaf 1 juli, of via een andere lidstaat die wél een uitleveringsovereenkomst heeft.

Het leven deze jonge Belg is in gevaar. Wij vragen een tussenkomst voor het te laat is.

Ik doe een oproep aan iedereen, aan iedere parlementair of verkozene, aan elke vereniging of organisatie die de rechten van de mens verdedigt in België of in Europa, om ons te ondersteunen en stappen te ondernemen die het leven van mijn broer kunnen redden.
