It is ironic indeed that the US is demanding that the practice of due-process-free indefinite detention be continued in Afghanistan and Iraq, two countries it invaded and then occupied while claiming it wanted to bring freedom and democracy there.
Give thanks that what is happening in Syria this year, Libya last year, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen in years before, continuing today, and planned to happen in Iran in the immediate future, cannot happen to you in America because Americans are not about to butcher their own, at least not yet.
It was that “pinpoint accuracy”, “surgical strike” stuff again, there were “unavoidable tragic errors”, “mistakes”, “scrupulous efforts made to avoid” etc., blah.
And as Britain’s Colonel Richard Kemp declared of the fourteen hundred dead of the Christmas and New year onslaught on Gaza in 2024-2009: “Mistakes are not war crimes.” (i)
